When a nation turns a deaf ear to correction, a powerful wake-up call becomes necessary. The prophet demands attention not through harsh criticism, but by reminding the people of God's absolute greatness, eternal nature, and exclusive control over both history and the natural world [ביאור שטיינזלץ, מלבי״ם].
In addressing the people, the prophet uses two distinct historical names for the nation's patriarch to reflect different spiritual realities. The primary approach among commentators is that the original name, given by a human father, represents a lower spiritual state. In contrast, the later name represents a much higher spiritual level, as it was granted to the patriarch directly by God. The nature of the nation's relationship with God is further defined by their status as those who are called by Him. The primary approach among commentators is that this simply refers to their identity; God personally gave the patriarch his new name, and the entire nation carries it. Another perspective views this calling as a matter of destiny, describing the people as God's chosen and summoned nation [רש״י, שד״ל]. Additionally, some explain that the people are called by God's own name, officially defining them as His children [אבן עזרא, שד״ל, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. Interestingly, certain ancient traditions add the title of "servant" when addressing the nation here. However, this addition does not appear in standard texts and is widely understood to be a common memory error, likely stemming from a historical mix-up with a similar prophetic passage [מנחת שי].
God then declares His absolute exclusivity and eternal presence across the entire timeline of existence. He points to the deep past before the world was even created, asserts His active presence in the current moment, and confirms His existence in the distant future, long after the physical world comes to an end [רד״ק, מצודת דוד, ביאור שטיינזלץ].
This eternal nature carries a profound historical and spiritual message. The same God who performed the miracles of the initial redemption will also bring about the upcoming redemption from Babylonian exile. These events are not the random results of natural laws or astrological shifts [מלבי״ם]. Because God exercises complete control from the very beginning of time to its ultimate end, the nation has a rock-solid foundation to trust completely in His promises [אבן עזרא].
