ישעיהו, פרק מ״ח, פסוק י״א

Isaiah 48:11Sefaria

לְמַעֲנִ֧י לְמַעֲנִ֛י אֶעֱשֶׂ֖ה כִּ֣י אֵ֣יךְ יֵחָ֑ל וּכְבוֹדִ֖י לְאַחֵ֥ר לֹא־אֶתֵּֽן׃ {פ}

The survival and ultimate salvation of the Israelites do not stem from their own good deeds or righteousness. Instead, their continued existence is deeply tied to their close connection with God and His careful protection of His own reputation in the world. The primary approach among commentators is that God refrains from destroying the nation simply to prevent His name from being disgraced. God emphasizes that He acts entirely for the sake of His own honor. This absolute focus teaches that the rescue of the people relies exclusively on this divine motive, completely independent of any merit or righteous acts they might possess [מצודת דוד].

Building on this idea, when God chooses to associate Himself with a lowly nation that He does not practically need, He shields them simply because they bear His name. Leaving them to ruin would be viewed as a direct insult to Him, prompting Him to act for His own sake [מלבי"ם]. A deep concern arises regarding how God's name might be profaned if He were to wipe out the Israelites completely [רש"י, רד"ק]. Conceptually, this fear of desecration is directly linked to God's glory. However, the connection is kept slightly apart in the phrasing to avoid explicitly associating any flaw or degradation directly with heavenly honor [שד"ל].

Ultimately, God will never allow the honor that rightfully belongs to Him to be handed over to false idols. If the Israelites were to fall entirely into the hands of their enemies, those who worship idols would proudly boast about their victory. They would claim that their false gods were supreme and that God lacked the strength to save His own people. Preventing this false narrative and protecting His global recognition remains the true driving force behind the salvation of the nation.
