Isaiah 48:17Sefaria

Divine providence acts as a constant, guiding force aimed directly at the success and well-being of the Israelites. The realization of their redemption, however, depends entirely on their willingness to follow this direction. This prophetic message serves to reveal the reward awaiting those who listen to God [אבן עזרא], focusing primarily on the impending release from the Babylonian exile [רד״ק]. The core assurance is that the people do not need to fear a temporary peace followed by another exile. Their future rests in their own hands; if they correct their actions, their departure from exile will transform into an eternal redemption [מלבי״ם].

God imparts wisdom solely for the personal benefit and ultimate success of the people Commentators offer different perspectives on the exact nature of this beneficial instruction. It can be understood as the development of true faith and correct beliefs [מלבי״ם]. Alternatively, it represents practical, daily guidance meant to ensure the nation's peace. This view carries a painful historical truth: had the Israelites listened to God from the beginning and walked in His ways, they never would have been exiled to Babylon, nor would they currently need saving [רד״ק]. A more specific approach suggests that this teaching is a direct, practical command to leave Babylon and return to the Land of Israel, since true success can only be found there. This divine call is aimed particularly at those exiles who stubbornly refused to leave and preferred to remain in foreign lands [שד״ל].

Beyond offering instruction, God actively directs the Israelites along the proper path they must travel Together, these two elements—teaching and guiding—create a complete picture of serving God. While the instruction shapes faith and engages the mind, the active guidance along the path ensures the actual performance of good deeds [מלבי״ם].
