Jeremiah 21:2Sefaria

Facing the crushing threat of a Babylonian siege, the leadership of Jerusalem finds itself in a moment of deep crisis. Desperate for Divine intervention, they turn to the prophet, hoping his elevated spiritual standing might awaken heavenly mercy. They plead with him to pray to God on behalf of the people [מצודת דוד], believing that his unique role could bring about a miraculous rescue [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. The sheer urgency of their situation is palpable, as the military assault is not a distant warning but an ongoing, continuous attack happening at that very moment [רד״ק].

In their desperation, the people of Jerusalem hope God will intervene with the same kind of miracles He performed for them in the past [מצודת דוד]. This plea relies on a clear historical precedent from the days of the prophet Isaiah. During that era, the King of Assyria laid a heavy siege to Jerusalem, but ultimately retreated and returned to his own land without ever conquering the city. The current leadership asks for a recreation of that exact wonder [ביאור שטיינזלץ].

Yet, their request for salvation is not limited to physical survival. The specific nature of their plea reveals a deeper desire for God to bring the nation to repentance, completely remaking them into a new creation, much like clay shaped in the hands of a potter. They recognize that through this profound spiritual repair, physical salvation will naturally follow [מלבי״ם]. The ultimate hope is that this transformation will cause Nebuchadnezzar to lift his siege and withdraw [מצודת דוד], retreating and vanishing much like a heavy cloud that dissipates and rises into the sky [מצודת ציון].
