Jeremiah 21:1Sefaria

During a moment of severe crisis, Jerusalem finds itself under a heavy siege by Nebuchadnezzar, the king of Babylon. Desperate for a solution, the political leadership turns to the prophet. King Zedekiah dispatches a delegation to Jeremiah with the hope of securing a miraculous salvation. The king wishes for God to perform wonders for His people just as He did in the past, causing the enemy to retreat [אברבנאל]. This royal delegation is composed of two senior officials. The first is Pashhur son of Malchiah, who is likely a different person from the well-known chief officer of the House of God. The second is Zephaniah son of Maaseiah the priest, who may be the same individual mentioned in other places as the deputy to the High Priest [ביאור שטיינזלץ].

This appeal to the prophet exposes a deep flaw in the king's spiritual understanding. Zedekiah asks Jeremiah to seek God and pray on behalf of the nation, but he does so out of foolishness, as neither he nor the people have genuinely repented. The king behaves as though the rescue of the city depends entirely on the prophet and his prayers. He completely ignores the fact that reversing the heavenly decree requires the people to correct their actions and commit to justice and righteousness.

Because of this profound lack of understanding, the response the king will ultimately receive from God will be uncompromising. It will make clear that without a fundamental change in their behavior, their weapons of war will provide no help, and the city will inevitably fall into the hands of the Babylonians [אברבנאל].
