Jeremiah delivers a harsh prophecy publicly in the House of God, speaking directly to the masses and the spiritual leadership of the time. Among the leaders listening are the priests, though their exact identity is a matter of discussion. They might be the regular servants of the Temple [ביאור שטיינזלץ], or they could actually be priests dedicated to the idol Baal [מצודת דוד].

Standing alongside them are the prophets. Unlike the priests, there is a clear consensus that these are not true messengers of God, but rather false prophets [מצודת דוד]. These individuals functioned as the leading spiritual thinkers of their era. They enjoyed immense popularity and public affection, primarily because they tailored their messages to match the exact expectations and desires of their audience [ביאור שטיינזלץ].
