The continued survival of the nation and the Temple depends entirely on a clear, twofold ultimatum set by God. The central requirement is to follow the Torah by actively obeying and fulfilling its laws. However, this expectation is deeply intertwined with a second, equally vital command: to listen to the messages of the prophets [מלבי״ם, חומת אנך]. God makes it explicitly clear that the people must uphold both of these responsibilities together. If they fail to meet this combined condition, the inevitable result will be the destruction of the Temple [מלבי״ם].
When examining the relationship between obeying the Torah and listening to the prophets, an interesting dynamic emerges. A special emphasis is placed on the words of the prophets. According to this perspective, God asks the people to listen to the voices of the prophets first, as He deeply cherishes them, and only afterward to follow the laws of the Torah. This highlights a profound concept: the teachings and guidance of the prophets are valued and beloved by God even more than the wisdom found within the Torah itself [חומת אנך].
