Once his prophecies are proven true and the false prophets are exposed, Jeremiah approaches the king to clear his name and save his life. He argues that since events have proven him right, he is clearly not a traitor but merely a messenger delivering the word of God. Therefore, there is absolutely no justification for keeping him in prison [מצודת דוד, ביאור שטיינזלץ].

The prophet offers an earnest plea, asking that his petition lean toward the king and be accepted [מצודת ציון]. His primary request is that he not be returned to his previous confinement. This urgent appeal is driven by a deep fear that the harsh conditions, severe distress, and pressure of the prison pit will ultimately cause his death [מצודת דוד, ביאור שטיינזלץ].
