The sudden lifting of the Babylonian siege on Jerusalem created a brief window of opportunity for the city's trapped residents to venture outside. Throughout the blockade, the prophet Jeremiah had remained inside the city walls, dedicating his time to praying to God that Jerusalem would be spared from capture [רש"י]. However, with the military pressure temporarily relieved, he decided to make his way toward his home territory in the land of Benjamin.

Commentators offer two primary explanations for his journey. One perspective suggests a practical errand related to his property and livelihood. He traveled to his hometown of Anathoth to claim his family inheritance, tend to his fields, gather food that had been set aside for him, or collect his rightful share of the priestly gifts [רש"י, רד"ק, שטיינזלץ]. Another perspective views his departure as a quiet escape. He sought to distance himself from the people of Jerusalem and slip away unnoticed [רד"ק, מלבי"ם, מצודת ציון]. He specifically feared that if he remained, he would be thrown into prison because of his harsh prophecies concerning the city [רד"ק].

Both motivations perfectly align with his method of departure. After enduring a lengthy siege, a massive crowd of residents flooded out of the city gates to assess the situation and rebuild their lives. Whether he was simply going to manage his land or actively fleeing from danger, Jeremiah intentionally blended into this large, moving crowd. By hiding among the departing masses, he ensured that the gatekeepers would not single him out, allowing him to leave the city completely undisturbed [מצודת דוד, מלבי"ם, שטיינזלץ].
