ירמיהו, פרק ל״ז, פסוק ד׳

Jeremiah 37:4Sefaria

A shift in national leadership brings a sudden change to the personal life of the prophet Jeremiah, allowing him to move openly among the people. When Zedekiah took the throne, he ordered Jeremiah to be released from the prison where the previous king, Jehoiakim, had confined him. This transition of power highlights a sharp contrast between the two rulers. Zedekiah was a righteous king who lived during a wicked generation, whereas Jehoiakim was a wicked king who lived in a righteous generation [רש״י].

Jeremiah's newfound ability to walk freely among the public represents a significant shift in how his message was treated. During Jehoiakim's reign, the prophet was deliberately locked away to silence him and prevent him from delivering his prophecies. His release under Zedekiah indicates a new openness and a willingness to hear and accept his words [מלבי״ם].

The prophet was no longer left to languish in confinement [מצודת ציון]. However, this period of liberty was not permanent. Jeremiah enjoyed his freedom only for a time, as it lasted just until he was captured and imprisoned once again at a later stage [רד״ק, ביאור שטיינזלץ].
