Jeremiah 9:24Sefaria

A wave of divine judgment is about to sweep across the region, driven by the expanding conquests of the Babylonian Empire. As Nebuchadnezzar's power grows, God's providence will manifest through strict retribution, bringing a harsh reckoning upon the surrounding nations These nations will be punished and destroyed by Babylon for the harm they caused the Israelites, though Nebuchadnezzar himself will eventually face divine justice for taking his cruelty toward Israel too far [רד״ק].

This impending punishment will not distinguish between those who are circumcised and those who are not; both will face the same fate The primary approach among commentators is that this highlights a profound spiritual reality regarding physical signs of devotion. The Israelites are physically circumcised but retain a stubborn, unyielding heart While neighboring nations like Egypt, Edom, Ammon, and Moab are physically uncircumcised and do not know God, the people of Judah suffer from an internal blockage, actively resisting the recognition of God and His actions. Because of this shared spiritual failing, both groups are considered uncircumcised in His eyes and will be punished together [אברבנאל].

This message directly confronts a popular misconception of the era. At the time, astrologers claimed that the Babylonian king's power would only affect uncircumcised nations, leaving circumcised peoples immune to his attacks. God shatters this illusion, making it clear that physical rituals offer no protection when the heart remains unchanged. The people are firmly warned to stop relying on astrological forecasts and to realize that their survival depends entirely on God's direct providence [מלבי״ם].
