ירמיהו, פרק ט׳, פסוק כ״ב

Jeremiah 9:22Sefaria

Amidst harsh prophecies of destruction, a sharp moral message emerges regarding the limits of human capability. People naturally rely on their personal advantages to survive, but these earthly traits lose all their value when facing the decree of God. Wisdom, physical power, and wealth are specifically highlighted because they represent the standard methods people use to save themselves in times of crisis. The wise rely on their cunning and strategy, the strong depend on their physical might, and the wealthy use their money to ransom their lives [רד״ק, אברבנאל].

Despite their perceived value, these attributes cannot save anyone from death or captivity. When God chooses not to help, worldly advantages offer no benefit, and a person must rely entirely on Him [מצודת דוד, רד״ק, צאינה וראינה]. Beyond the individual level, these three traits represent the primary classes that make up any human society: the thinkers and judges, the military and government, and the working and merchant class. By addressing all three, the warning applies to the entire nation, emphasizing that no sector of society will be able to lean on its unique advantages during the coming destruction [אברבנאל].

Taking pride in these abilities is fundamentally flawed for several reasons. First, the Israelites failed to act properly. Their wisdom became meaningless the moment they rejected the word of God and strayed from His paths [רש״י, רד״ק, שטיינזלץ]. Second, mental aptitude, physical strength, and financial success are simply gifts that God has deposited within a person. Boasting about them is like taking credit for a deposit that does not actually belong to you. The only thing truly placed under human control, and the only valid source of pride, is a person's fear of heaven [מלבי״ם].

The primary approach among commentators, however, is that these traits are not inherently negative. A person is permitted to take pride in them only when they serve as tools to achieve a higher purpose. Earthly advantages find their true value when wisdom is channeled toward knowing God, strength is used to execute justice and protect the oppressed, and wealth is utilized to spread kindness and charity throughout the world [מלבי״ם, אברבנאל].
