A culture steeped in falsehood does not merely damage human relationships; it eventually seeps into the spiritual realm, thoroughly corrupting a person's connection with the Divine. When a society is consumed by dishonesty, it creates an inescapable environment. From one perspective, God addresses the prophet directly, noting that deceit surrounds him from every possible direction [מצודת דוד, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. God questions the very purpose of the prophet remaining among such a dishonest nation when all efforts to guide them back to the right path have ultimately failed [רד״ק]. Alternatively, this reality reflects the state of the people themselves. Even in moments of quiet rest, their minds are constantly occupied with plotting further manipulation [רש״י].
Looking deeper into human psychology, the concept of deceit takes on a life of its own. Typically, dishonesty exists only on the surface; a person might speak falsely to another while still recognizing the truth within their own mind. In this severe state, however, manipulation and double-speak have penetrated so deeply that they reside within the heart itself. The people have reached a tragic point where they are entirely deceiving themselves [מלבי״ם].
This total immersion in falsehood creates a permanent barrier to spiritual truth. The habit of lying has become such a powerful behavioral and mental norm that living in deception is simply more comfortable for the people than genuinely knowing God [מצודת דוד, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. Trapped in this comfortable falsehood, they find themselves completely unable to abandon their harmful ways [רד״ק], ultimately replacing their reverence for God with a foundation of lies [רש״י]. This internal dishonesty creates a profound spiritual contradiction. Outwardly, the people project an image of seeking truth and desiring a relationship with God. In practice, however, they actively refuse to truly know Him, making their entire spiritual identity nothing more than an exercise in deep self-deception [מלבי״ם].
