איוב, פרק ל״ב, פסוק י״ט

Job 32:19Sefaria

הִנֵּֽה־בִטְנִ֗י כְּיַ֥יִן לֹֽא־יִפָּתֵ֑חַ כְּאֹב֥וֹת חֲ֝דָשִׁ֗ים יִבָּקֵֽעַ׃

The immense internal pressure of unexpressed thoughts is captured through a vivid image of intense fermentation. Elihu is filled with a spirit and a rush of words he desperately wants to speak, feeling an internal brewing akin to wine sealed tightly in a closed vessel. The longer the wine remains unopened, preserving its potent flavor, the more the fermenting gases build up, creating a massive pressure that demands to break free. This perfectly reflects Elihu's state; he has been brimming with arguments since the very beginning of the debate but has forced himself to remain completely silent [אלשיך].

The primary approach among commentators explains that this pressure threatens to burst forth like wine stored in large leather wineskins, which [רש״י] describes as being as tall as a person. Although a minority opinion suggests the imagery refers to a type of pipe or tube, the widely accepted understanding is that it describes wineskins [אבן עזרא].

The metaphor specifically highlights the use of new wineskins. When active, fermenting wine is poured into fresh wineskins, the rising internal pressure causes them to split and break quite easily. This creates a direct parallel to Elihu's personal situation. Just as a new wineskin is not yet conditioned to hold fermenting wine and bursts quickly, Elihu, being a young man, is not accustomed to suppressing his words. The natural passion and boiling blood of his youth make it impossible for him to remain patient. The arguments stored inside him have grown so powerful that they are on the verge of erupting outward on their own [מצודת דוד, מלבי״ם, אלשיך].
