איוב, פרק ל״ב, פסוק ה׳

Job 32:5Sefaria

וַיַּ֤רְא אֱלִיה֗וּא כִּ֘י־אֵ֤ין מַעֲנֶ֗ה בְּ֭פִי שְׁלֹ֥שֶׁת הָאֲנָשִׁ֗ים וַיִּ֥חַר אַפּֽוֹ׃ {פ}

The debate between Job and his companions reaches a dead end, marked by a heavy, unresolved silence. This absolute quiet serves as a critical turning point, shattering the common assumption that wisdom naturally belongs to the elderly [אלשיך]. A younger observer, Elihu, watches as the three friends simply run out of answers, completely failing to bring the intense argument to a close.

Their sudden inability to reply brings the subtle differences in their worldviews to the surface. At first glance, the perspectives of the friends might seem like one unified opinion—a similarity that even made it difficult for earlier scholars to recognize the distinct voice of each speaker. However, their ultimate failure to respond highlights the unique nuances and limitations of their approaches [תקות אנוש].

Seeing this surrender fuels a deep frustration within Elihu, and his anger turns directly toward the friends. He is upset because they fail to defend their own beliefs. Even according to their own logic, they should have at least stood firmly by their claims instead of completely giving up and accepting defeat [מלבי״ם]. Driven by this anger, Elihu decides he can no longer hold back [מצודת דוד]. He realizes that he must step forward and actively take control of the conversation [ביאור שטיינזלץ].
