איוב, פרק ל״ב, פסוק כ׳

Job 32:20Sefaria

אֲדַבְּרָ֥ה וְיִֽרְוַֽח־לִ֑י אֶפְתַּ֖ח שְׂפָתַ֣י וְאֶעֱנֶֽה׃

Holding back thoughts for a long time can create an intense, almost physical pressure. For a person bursting with a need to respond, speaking becomes a desperate search for relief from a prolonged inner distress. The overwhelming desire to speak comes from a need to escape this suffocating tension and find breathing room, which is the exact opposite of feeling cornered and stressed [מצודת ציון, רלב״ג]. The act of talking is meant to release the heavy feeling of being entirely full of unsaid thoughts [מצודת דוד]. It offers a much-needed rest from the oppressive, pressing spirit trapped inside [מלבי״ם], finally allowing the person to express himself freely [ביאור שטיינזלץ].

When it comes to the actual moment of speaking, commentators offer two distinct perspectives on how the words are released. The first approach views the speaker as being so heavily loaded with prepared arguments that he does not even need to force them out. Simply opening his mouth is enough. The sheer volume of thoughts is so great that the words will naturally burst forth on their own [מצודת דוד, מלבי״ם].

In contrast, another perspective highlights a deeply psychological approach to managing anger. The speaker is boiling with rage at the ongoing conversation and fears that an immediate, direct response will come out as a fiery attack rather than a thoughtful answer. To prevent sounding like someone merely looking for a fight, he plans a strategic delay. He will first offer general introductory remarks simply to let off steam and soothe his frustration. Only after this pressure is released and he feels calm will he address the actual arguments in a measured and substantive manner [אלשיך].
