איוב, פרק ח׳, פסוק י״ג

Job 8:13Sefaria

כֵּ֗ן אׇ֭רְחוֹת כׇּל־שֹׁ֣כְחֵי אֵ֑ל וְתִקְוַ֖ת חָנֵ֣ף תֹּאבֵֽד׃

The sudden collapse of those who abandon their spiritual roots is often compared to a plant that quickly withers. The path of those who forget God is defined by a lack of trust in Him and a disbelief in His guiding hand [תקות אנוש]. By turning away, they abandon the very source meant to nourish and sustain them [ביאור שטיינזלץ].

The primary approach among commentators is that, at the beginning of their journey, those who forget God often experience great success. They are surrounded by good fortune, fully enjoying pleasures and luxuries [מלבי״ם, מצודת דוד], and thriving as long as luck favors them. However, this prosperity is strictly temporary. It lasts only until their measure of sin is completely full [רש״י] or until the spiritual merits they previously earned run out [אלשיך]. Because these individuals place their trust entirely in material wealth, they are left highly vulnerable. When the day of reckoning arrives, or when their physical assets are lost, they have absolutely nothing left to support them, and God ultimately abandons them [מצודת דוד, אלשיך].

The fate of such an individual is sealed when their expectations are ultimately destroyed. This type of person is generally understood to simply be wicked [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. Some specify that this refers to someone who flatters their own evil desires, easily giving in to temptation [מצודת ציון]. Another perspective suggests this describes a hypocrite whose words do not match their heart, constantly creating false expectations in others through empty promises without any action [תקות אנוש]. Regardless of the exact nature of their behavior, their ultimate hope is that their wealth and success will last forever [אלשיך]. Yet, much like a swamp plant that dries up in an instant, their hope vanishes, and they meet a swift and sudden end [רש״י, מלבי״ם, מצודת דוד].
