A plant that shoots up quickly and enjoys an abundance of water appears incredibly strong and impressive. Yet, its absolute reliance on a constant water supply is exactly what leads to its sudden downfall. Picture the plant at the very height of its vitality. The primary approach among commentators is that it is bursting with moisture, freshness, and youth [רש״י, מצודות, רלב״ג, מלבי״ם, שטיינזלץ]. Other perspectives suggest this peak condition refers specifically to the stage of budding and blooming [רמב״ן], or simply indicates the physical location where the plant thrives [אבן עזרא].

While the plant is in this magnificent state, it remains untouched by human hands [רש״י, מצודת ציון, מלבי״ם]. There are two ways to understand why it is left alone. One view explains that because the plant is so young, fresh, and robust, the proper time to harvest it has not yet arrived [רלב״ג, מלבי״ם, שטיינזלץ]. A contrasting view argues that it remains untouched to highlight the sheer speed of its destruction. The plant simply dries out and collapses on its own before anyone even has the opportunity to gather it [אבן עזרא, רמב״ן, רלב״ג].

The tragic end of this magnificent growth reveals a fascinating paradox in nature. Water and marsh plants are completely saturated and require massive amounts of moisture to survive. The instant their water source dries up or the summer heat intensifies, they wither away almost immediately. In contrast, ordinary grass that grows in dry soil is not accustomed to such a lavish water supply and easily outlives the impressive marsh plants [רש״י, מצודת דוד, מלבי״ם, אלשיך].

Ultimately, this natural cycle serves as a powerful metaphor for the fate of the wicked and those who oppose God. Like the marsh plant, they may rise and prosper in the blink of an eye, supported by an illusion of endless abundance. However, their success is incredibly fragile, and they are destined to perish and vanish on their own with the exact same suddenness [רמב״ן].
