A vivid botanical image captures the essence of human growth and resilience, presenting a fresh, thriving plant that successfully spreads its reach across a garden. Yet, a deep divide exists regarding exactly who this flourishing plant represents. One approach views this as a metaphor for the righteous person. Like a vibrant tree that survives the trials of time, the righteous individual continues to grow, with their good deeds constantly branching outward [מצודת דוד, אלשיך]. Conversely, another perspective understands this as a continuation of the description of the hypocrite or the wicked. In this view, the wicked experience massive and rapid success at the beginning of their journey, but this prosperity is entirely temporary [רש״י, תקות אנוש].

The plant itself is moist, fresh, and bursting with life [רש״י, מצודת ציון, רלב״ג]. Unlike swamp vegetation that relies heavily on abundant water, this resilient growth can thrive and prosper in any standard garden [מלבי״ם]. However, its relationship with the sun is a matter of debate. Some interpret its exposure to the sun as a matter of timing. The plant remains moist and fresh only before the sun rises fully; once its appointed time arrives, the intense heat will dry it out completely [רש״י, אבן עזרא, רמב״ן, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. On the other hand, a different interpretation suggests incredible strength. The plant is so robust and saturated with water that it stands firm against the beating sun, remaining perfectly fresh and completely unharmed by the intense heat [מצודת דוד, רלב״ג, מלבי״ם, תקות אנוש, אלשיך].

As it grows, its young, soft branches [רש״י, מצודת ציון, רלב״ג] or deep roots [רש״י, ביאור שטיינזלץ] extend outward. These shoots spread across the entire garden where it is planted [מצודת דוד, רמב״ן]. The growth is sometimes seen as so wild and powerful that the branches climb upward, extending far beyond the actual borders of the garden [תקות אנוש].

Following the view that this represents the righteous person, this expansive growth takes on a profound spiritual meaning. The righteous may suffer in this physical world, enduring the harsh heat of life's troubles. However, they send their branches, which are their good deeds, reaching upward and outward beyond their immediate surroundings, ultimately extending toward the Garden of Eden in the higher world [אלשיך].
