Joshua 22:27Sefaria

A deep geographical divide can easily lead to a spiritual and social fracture. When the tribes settling across the Jordan River built an imposing altar, it sparked fears of a divided nation and the creation of an alternative site of worship. Yet, the true motivation behind this monumental structure was exactly the opposite. It was a sincere effort to ensure their eternal connection to serving God and to prevent any future disconnect from the rest of the people.

The primary approach among commentators is that this altar was never intended for actual sacrifices. Instead, it was constructed purely as a symbol and a declaration of faith to bridge the vast geographical distance. By building a structure that perfectly mirrored the true altar of God, the tribes created a living, permanent testimony. Its sole purpose was to stand as an enduring witness that the communities across the river had not abandoned the laws of worship and still retained their rightful share in God.

The builders fully intended to continue bringing their burnt offerings and sacrifices exactly as required. However, these offerings would only be brought to the Tabernacle or the Temple, the true dwelling place of God, and never offered on the newly built replica. Ultimately, the monument was a preemptive measure aimed at future generations. The builders feared a time might come when the descendants living in the main land would look across the river and claim that their distant brothers had no share in God. By establishing this unmistakable symbol, they ensured that no one could ever exclude them or their children from the holy service.
