Joshua 22:9Sefaria

The departure of the two and a half tribes marks the end of a long, shared period of conquest. As these tribes finally make their way back to their inheritance on the eastern side of the Jordan river, the starting point of their journey reveals a deep sense of national loyalty. They set out to return to their land [ביאור שטיינזלץ], but they deliberately choose not to take the most direct route. Joshua had dismissed them from his own city in the mountains of Ephraim, from where they could have easily traveled straight east. Instead, they extend their trip by heading north to Shiloh. This detour highlights their strong desire to pray at the Tabernacle of God and to formally say goodbye to the rest of the Israelites gathered there. By taking this extra step, they prove that their hearts are fully committed to the holiness of the Tabernacle and the unity of the entire nation [מלבי״ם].

Despite these pure intentions, their devotion faces a severe test almost immediately. Upon reaching the Jordan region, the returning tribes build a massive altar. Their only goal is to create a memorial monument to preserve their bond with the other tribes, with no intention of using it for sacrifices. However, the rest of the Israelites completely misunderstand the gesture, viewing the construction as a double betrayal. Nationally, it appears as an act of treason, suggesting they are separating from the people to form an independent entity. Religiously, it is seen as a crime against God by building a second altar, violating the rule against offering sacrifices outside the chosen location and echoing the forbidden practices of idol worship. This tragic misunderstanding stands in sharp contrast to the unity displayed just moments before in Shiloh, prompting the rest of the nation to mobilize for a civil war. Fortunately, before any fighting can break out, Phinehas the priest and the community leaders are sent to confront them and uncover the truth of the matter [אברבנאל].
