יהושע, פרק כ״ב, פסוק ד׳

With the conquest of the land finally complete, the time arrives for the nation's armies to disband. Joshua officially dismisses the tribes from the eastern side of the Jordan River from their military service, granting them permission to return to their homes [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. This release comes because God has granted their fellow Israelites a secure place of rest and a permanent inheritance [מצודת דוד]. Having fulfilled their duty, the soldiers are instructed by Joshua to turn away from their current location and begin the journey back to their own lands [מצודת דוד].
