The fall of Jericho marks a moment of absolute finality, where the aftermath of the conquest is handled with strict intention rather than typical plundering. As the battle concludes, a clear separation is enforced between the general ruins of the city and the valuable items set apart specifically for God.

The treatment of the conquered city follows two distinct paths. On one hand, complete devastation sweeps through the area. Fire consumes the city and its general contents, bringing an end to the remaining inhabitants and destroying all the ordinary, everyday objects left behind [מלבי״ם].

In sharp contrast, specific materials are deliberately spared from the flames. Metals such as silver, gold, copper, and iron are excluded from the general destruction. Instead of being burned, these enduring items are preserved completely intact and transferred directly into the treasury of the house of God, dedicated entirely to His service [מלבי״ם, ביאור שטיינזלץ].
