The preparations for the decisive battle over Jericho bring about a shift in standard procedures, seamlessly blending military strategy with holy duties. Standing with the nation before the city, Joshua assigns the priests a completely new role. Until this moment, the responsibility of carrying the Ark rested solely on the Levites. However, Joshua now instructs the priests to take up the Ark. This change occurs because the Ark is destined to bring about great wonders during this specific campaign, making it fitting for the priests themselves to bear it [מלבי״ם]. Joshua deduces this instruction directly from God's command regarding the battle; since God directed the priests to carry the horns, it is only logical that they should also be the ones to carry the holy Ark [אלשיך].
Alongside those carrying the Ark, Joshua appoints a separate group of seven priests to carry seven horns and walk directly in front of the Ark [אברבנאל]. This specific positioning is part of a calculated military formation designed to combine natural defense with miraculous leadership. A vanguard marches at the very front of the procession, consisting of warriors from the tribes of Reuben, Gad, and half of Manasseh. Their primary duty is to protect the Ark should enemy forces suddenly emerge from the city to attack. Following this vanguard are the seven priests sounding the horns, and immediately behind them is the Ark. Finally, the rest of the nation marches as a rearguard, protecting the camp from behind. Through this careful arrangement, the Ark and the priests remain completely secure at the center of the forces circling the city [אברבנאל].
