Joshua 6:22Sefaria

In the midst of the total destruction of Jericho, a specific rescue mission takes center stage, highlighting the deep moral obligation to keep a promise. Joshua personally assigns the task of saving Rahab and her family to the two spies who originally visited the city. The responsibility falls directly on them because they were the ones who made the initial commitment to protect her. By carrying out the rescue themselves, they ensure that the oath they swore is fulfilled completely, honoring every detail and condition of their agreement

At the start of the mission, the spies are recognized by a title that reflects their high rank and importance. Joshua's precise orders are to rescue Rahab along with her immediate family, her parents, and her belongings. The spies, however, decide to go beyond these instructions and rescue her extended family members as well. Because they step outside the strict bounds of their original orders, their status is later described using a lesser term, one typically associated with young men [אלשיך].

Even though the spies exceed their mandate, Joshua ultimately accepts their actions after the fact. He agrees to the broader rescue because all of these additional extended family members had sought safety by taking shelter together inside Rahab's home [אלשיך].
