יהושע, פרק ו׳, פסוק י״ב

Joshua 6:12Sefaria

Following the initial march around the fortified walls of Jericho, a new rhythm is established for the Israelite camp. The actions undertaken on the morning of the second day set the exact pattern that would be repeated for the remainder of the six-day period leading up to the city's fall.

The narrative specifically highlights the early morning start on this second day. The primary approach among commentators notes that an early rising was not necessary on the first day. When the initial march took place, there was no need for an unusually early start because Joshua and the nation were already stationed right next to Jericho, within the immediate vicinity of the city [מלבי״ם].

Furthermore, rather than simply stating that the camp repeated their previous actions, the account deliberately details the priests taking up the Ark of God. This specific mention highlights a major shift in how the Ark was transported. On the second day, the priests assumed the responsibility of carrying the Ark from the very moment the Israelites departed from their camp at Gilgal all the way to Jericho. This stands in sharp contrast to the events of the first day. Originally, the Levites carried the Ark during the journey to Jericho. It was only transferred to the priests upon their arrival, since God delivered His instructions to Joshua only after he was already positioned close to the city [מלבי״ם].
