פרשת במדבר

Numbers 3:28Sefaria

The census of the Levite families reveals a great deal about their specific duties and their history. Among them, the family of Kohath stands out both in their sacred responsibility and their sheer numbers. They were entrusted with a unique duty, bearing the responsibility of carrying the holy vessels of the Tabernacle [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. Most notably, this included the Ark of the Covenant, which represented the pinnacle of holiness compared to the rest of the Tabernacle [אבן עזרא].

Their role as guardians of these sacred objects is introduced before the exact details of their physical labor are even outlined. This early mention serves a specific purpose: it explains why the family of Kohath was so remarkably large. Numbering eight thousand six hundred men, their population was significantly higher than the other Levite families, Gershon and Merari.

This gap in population stems from the time of the Egyptian enslavement. During that era, the entire tribe of Levi was set apart for the service of God, a situation that naturally led to a general decline in their numbers. Yet, the descendants of Kohath accepted their responsibilities with extraordinary devotion and strictly guarded their duties. Because of their unwavering dedication to their mission, their numbers did not shrink to the same extent as the other Levite families, who struggled to maintain that intense level of commitment [העמק דבר].
