פרשת במדבר

Numbers 3:3Sefaria

The establishment of the priesthood marked a distinct turning point for the Israelites, elevating a specific family to serve God and defining how they would be dedicated to their work. The focus narrows exclusively to the sons of Aaron, deliberately setting them apart from other prominent figures. Although Moses and Aaron are both part of the broader family history, the sons of Moses did not undergo the anointing process and never became priests, nor did Aaron's grandson Phinehas at this early stage [מלבי״ם]. This specific selection emphasizes that only Aaron's sons were chosen for the priesthood, officially disqualifying the firstborns and the rest of the Israelites who had previously managed holy duties [אור החיים].

The transition into the priesthood required a profound, one-time historical event. These men were anointed with the holy oil, an honor typically associated with high priests [אבן עזרא]. This physical anointing was an absolute necessity because Aaron's sons were born before their father was chosen for his sacred role. Lacking an innate, inherited priestly status, they required a direct anointing to officially enter the priesthood. In future generations, regular priests would simply inherit the status without needing to be anointed while a high priest was alive [ספורנו].

This initiation took place during the dedication of the Tabernacle, officially authorizing the priests for their work [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. It served as a formal appointment and transfer of authority, fully empowering them for their new responsibilities [אם למקרא]. Furthermore, their appointment carried a broader significance. Even though Aaron was the sole high priest at the time, this initial anointing granted his sons the foundational eligibility to potentially serve in that highest capacity later on [העמק דבר].

Yet, the accumulation of these magnificent titles carries a heavy moral weight, setting the stage for the tragic deaths of Nadab and Abihu. By highlighting their status as personally appointed and anointed priests, a clear lesson emerges about how God interacts with those closest to Him. God holds His devoted servants to an incredibly exacting standard. Despite their greatness and exalted rank, God showed them no favoritism, punishing them immediately the moment they sinned by offering an unauthorized fire [שפתי כהן].
