פרשת במדבר

Numbers 3:2Sefaria

A simple family record can carry profound weight, revealing the individual standing and tragic destinies of those named. The explicit listing of Aaron's sons highlights that each was a highly regarded individual in his own right, valued for his own merits rather than merely for his famous lineage [ספורנו]. This record captures the specific sons who stood before him on that exact day [ביאור שטיינזלץ].

A subtle pause in the traditional reading separates the title of firstborn from the oldest son, Nadab. Because Nadab died without leaving any children, his status as firstborn held no practical meaning; instead, the title refers back to Aaron himself, who was the older brother of Moses [קיצור בעל הטורים]. The underlying reason for this childlessness was rooted in pride. Nadab and his brother Abihu remained unmarried because they arrogantly believed that no woman was truly worthy or good enough for them [פענח רזא].

The traditional chanting of these names creates a painful, lingering pause over Nadab and Abihu, before quickly moving on to the younger brothers, Eleazar and Ithamar [רש ר הירש]. This heavy hesitation foreshadows the tragic end of the two older brothers, who were eventually consumed by fire. Their severe punishment was actually set in motion much earlier, during the revelation at Mount Sinai. At that time, they overstepped their boundaries by ignoring the clear instruction that only Moses was permitted to approach the holy space, choosing instead to gaze directly at God [פענח רזא].
