פרשת במדבר

Numbers 3:8Sefaria

The Levites are entrusted with a profound responsibility regarding the Tabernacle and its sacred items, establishing a vital link between their daily duties and the entire nation. Their task involves protecting the various items used in the service, including musical instruments and ceremonial tools [מלבי״ם]. They are also responsible for the major sacred objects, such as the Ark, the Menorah, the Table, and the Altars, which collectively transform the Tabernacle into a spiritual center that unites the community [רש״ר הירש]. Because of the immense prestige and high status of these items, the Levites must guard them with great care [העמק דבר]. This protection means ensuring that every object remains completely whole and without any flaw, because the items only possess the power to sanctify when they are in perfect condition.

Beyond caring for the physical objects, the Levites carry out a broader duty on behalf of the Israelites. The primary approach among commentators is that the Levites act as direct representatives of the people. Originally, the responsibility to prepare the needs of the Tabernacle and perform its services, such as carrying the structure and singing, belonged to the entire nation of Israel rather than just the leadership [ספורנו, העמק דבר, מלבי״ם]. The sacred items and the work itself are essentially a public deposit belonging to every single Israelite, with each person holding a personal share in them [רש״ר הירש]. Therefore, the Levites step in to act as agents, performing the service for the entire public. As a direct result of taking on the labor that was originally meant for the whole nation, the Levites receive tithes from the people as their rightful compensation [רש״י, מזרחי].

While the main perspective views the Levites as representatives working on behalf of the people, a different approach suggests their role is focused on physical protection. In this view, rather than working as substitutes for the Israelites, the Levites serve as a protective barrier around the Tabernacle. Their duty is to stand guard and prevent any Israelite from accidentally approaching or touching the sacred space [אבן עזרא].
