וּמִשְׁמֶ֤רֶת בְּנֵֽי־גֵרְשׁוֹן֙ בְּאֹ֣הֶל מוֹעֵ֔ד הַמִּשְׁכָּ֖ן וְהָאֹ֑הֶל מִכְסֵ֕הוּ וּמָסַ֕ךְ פֶּ֖תַח אֹ֥הֶל מוֹעֵֽד׃

Assigning specific roles among the Levites ensured perfect order and prevented disputes as the Israelites traveled through the desert. Each family received exact responsibilities for transporting parts of the Tabernacle. Within the hierarchy of honor and holiness, the family of Gershon occupied a middle position. Their responsibility for the fabric curtains and coverings held less sanctity than the inner holy vessels carried by the family of Kohath, yet it was considered more honorable than transporting the heavy wooden boards, bars, and pillars assigned to the family of Merari [רלב״ג].

The designated duty of the Gershonites involved managing several specific textile components [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. When detailing their charge, the initial reference to the Tabernacle does not denote the entire structure, as that would make the subsequent list of items completely unnecessary [מזרחי, גור אריה]. Instead, it points specifically to the ten lowest curtains made of twisted linen [אבן עזרא, חזקוני]. These specific layers earned this primary title because they formed the visible interior for anyone standing inside the space [שפתי חכמים, גור אריה].

Directly above these linen layers rested another set of eleven curtains crafted from goat hair [אבן עזרא, חזקוני]. This layer functioned as a true tent, acting as a roof that sheltered the lower curtains and draped down to cover their sides [רש״י, מזרחי, גור אריה]. Over this tent lay the uppermost protective layers. While there were actually two distinct top covers—one of red-dyed ram skins and another of special animal skins—they are grouped together conceptually [אבן עזרא, אבי עזר, מלבי״ם]. Because both sets of skins shared the exact same purpose of providing a flat, protective layer over the roof, they are viewed as a single, unified cover [שפתי חכמים, מזרחי, גור אריה].

Finally, the Gershonites were responsible for the curtain that separated and protected the main entrance [רש״י, מזרחי]. Although the term used for this screen usually implies a covering spread out from above like a roof, any partition designed to offer protection fits this description, whether stretched overhead or hung vertically from the side. In this instance, the hanging curtain protected the inner space and ensured the doorway did not remain exposed to the outside [מזרחי, גור אריה].
