משלי, פרק ג׳, פסוק כ״ה

Proverbs 3:25Sefaria

אַל־תִּ֭ירָא מִפַּ֣חַד פִּתְאֹ֑ם וּמִשֹּׁאַ֥ת רְ֝שָׁעִ֗ים כִּ֣י תָבֹֽא׃

A profound sense of security is promised to humanity, offering protection from life's most unpredictable threats. This assurance addresses two distinct categories of fear: sudden, unannounced dangers and the destruction associated with wicked individuals. The first threat involves massive, destructive events that strike without any prior warning [רלב״ג], or simply the random, unpredictable tragedies of time that occur in an instant [עמנואל הרומי].

The second threat involves profound ruin, understood either as absolute disaster [ביאור שטיינזלץ] or as a deep, overwhelming darkness [מצודת ציון]. The primary approach among commentators is that this does not refer to the harm the wicked inflict on others, but rather to the punishment and calamity that fall directly upon the wicked themselves. When a person witnesses a severe disaster striking evil people, they might naturally worry that the destruction will spill over and harm them as well. However, they are promised complete safety; the ruin will not touch them [רש״י, עמנואל הרומי, מצודת דוד]. Even if a catastrophe is specifically designed to wipe out the wicked, an innocent person will be saved through God's direct care and His providence [מלבי״ם].

Beyond physical dangers, this promise also addresses deep internal anxieties. A person might worry that their prayers and personal merits will not be enough to save them in extreme situations. They might fear sudden troubles, thinking they will not have enough time to pray to God before the disaster hits. Similarly, they might fear the harm caused by wicked people, believing that since human beings possess free will, it is impossible to escape their choices. Yet, they are reassured that God guarantees His protection despite these fears [אלשיך].
