Proverbs 3:26Sefaria

כִּֽי־יְ֭הֹוָה יִֽהְיֶ֣ה בְכִסְלֶ֑ךָ וְשָׁמַ֖ר רַגְלְךָ֣ מִלָּֽכֶד׃

Divine providence closely accompanies a person through life, offering a shield against both visible and hidden dangers. The foundation of this protection relies entirely on the level of trust a person places in God. In response to this reliance, God actively guards the individual from a wide array of physical and spiritual obstacles.

The primary approach among commentators is that this relationship centers on a profound sense of hope, trust, and support. When God serves as the ultimate source of security, He watches over the person and prevents them from falling into harm. There is a subtle difference between ordinary hope and true security. While hope is merely an expectation for good things to happen, true security involves a deep sense of peace and safety from evil. Normally, a person who feels overly secure and fails to take practical precautions can easily fall into a trap. Yet, when God is the anchor of that security, He supplies the necessary oversight and keeps the person completely safe [מלבי״ם].

Another perspective connects this state of security to human ignorance. God stands by a person and offers protection specifically in areas where they lack understanding [רש״י]. Often, an individual might feel completely at peace simply because they are unaware of a sudden danger approaching them. In these vulnerable moments, when a person does not know how to defend themselves, God intervenes to shield them from unexpected harm [אלשיך].

This divine protection ensures that a person is rescued from hidden obstacles and traps. God does not remove the free will of wicked individuals who seek to cause harm and set snares. Instead, He carefully guides the steps of the one who trusts in Him, ensuring their foot never lands in the trap [אלשיך]. Through this guidance, the trusting person escapes the snares of life that inevitably capture the wicked who walk in darkness [עמנואל הרומי].

Beyond physical safety, this continuous care extends deeply into the spiritual realm. When a person attaches themselves to God with complete faith, His providence attaches to them in return [עמנואל הרומי]. Through healthy faith and good habits, God protects the individual from stumbling or becoming entangled in foreign and harmful ideas. This reflects the spiritual principle that anyone who makes a genuine effort to purify themselves will always receive assistance from heaven [אמרי דעת].
