Proverbs 3:31Sefaria

The temptation to follow corrupt power and ill-gotten gains is a constant human struggle, especially when wrongdoers achieve wealth and high social standing. The danger in observing such individuals is twofold, involving both the emotional trap of jealousy and the practical risk of adopting their destructive habits. The primary approach among commentators is that this addresses interactions with an oppressor or thief [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. The initial caution is against envying the material success of such a person Even when corrupt individuals become models of success and are showered with respect, one must not crave their status or desire to copy their actions

There is a severe risk of moral decline when observing this success. A corrupt person might use their dishonest wealth to buy honor, perhaps by sending expensive gifts to those in power. If an ordinary person tries to copy this method to gain similar respect, they will quickly realize they lack the honest funds to do so. Ultimately, this pressure will force them to steal and oppress others just to keep up [רלב״ג]. Therefore, it is crucial to stay completely away from any path that stems from corruption, as these routes carry every kind of negative character trait [אלשיך].

Beyond the practical risks, there are two distinct motivations for falling into this trap. While jealousy is driven by a simple desire for the wicked person's success, actively choosing their path represents a deeper danger. This occurs when a person adopts the corrupt lifestyle out of a flawed ideological belief, mistakenly convincing themselves that it is actually the right and proper way to live [מלבי״ם].

On a deeper, philosophical level, the concept of a corrupt person extends beyond physical theft. It symbolizes a profound spiritual and internal destruction. This is a person who robs their own soul, starving it of intellect and wisdom while chasing after physical, animalistic desires Furthermore, another perspective views this individual as someone who holds false beliefs and uses deceptive logic to spread lies. When dealing with a person like this, the instruction to avoid their ways is absolute. Even if a few of their arguments seem logical or correct on the surface, one must reject them entirely, because their foundational path is completely divorced from the truth
