Proverbs 3:32Sefaria

The path a person chooses in life does more than dictate their outward actions; it directly determines their level of intimacy with their Creator. On one side is the individual whose crooked ways arouse divine disgust, and on the other are those welcomed into God's inner circle of trust. A person who strays from the straight path is characterized by a crooked walk through life This deviation does not necessarily involve committing severe crimes. Often, it describes someone who does not actively do evil but is simply stubborn, withholding kindness from others or refusing to lend to the poor. Even though this is merely a passive avoidance of doing good, the stubbornness and distancing from virtue are considered an abomination to God [אלשיך]. Furthermore, this departure from honesty is not only behavioral but also intellectual. A mind that wanders down twisted paths can ultimately lead a person to heresy and a denial of faith

In stark contrast are the upright, whose hearts, minds, and character traits are fully corrected and aligned with honesty While the straying individual is noted in the singular to highlight the disgrace of such behavior, the upright are described in the plural. This distinction teaches that God shares His affection and confidence with anyone who chooses honesty, elevating them to the highest ranks of the righteous [אלשיך].

This deep closeness means God transforms the upright into His confidants, sharing His counsel with them just as He shared His plans with Abraham Commentators explore the nature of this shared secret through various lenses. It may refer to the hidden mysteries of creation and the heavenly realms [מלבי״ם]. Alternatively, it represents the revelation of divine providence and prophecy, as God does not act without revealing His plans to His prophets [אמרי דעת]. Another approach suggests this secret is a deep understanding of how God runs the world, allowing the upright to know in advance the decrees planned for the wicked [אבן עזרא]. Ultimately, these two paths represent absolute opposites that cannot coexist: a foolish faction that distances itself from God, and the upright who attain the highest levels of spiritual insight [אמרי דעת].
