Proverbs 3:24Sefaria

אִם־תִּשְׁכַּ֥ב לֹֽא־תִפְחָ֑ד וְ֝שָׁכַבְתָּ֗ וְֽעָרְבָ֥ה שְׁנָתֶֽךָ׃

The ultimate reward for embracing wisdom and divine instruction is a state of absolute tranquility, offering profound security in both the physical world and the eternal realm. The primary approach among commentators views this as a promise of physical protection rooted in a deep trust in God. A person who lives with this wisdom enjoys a pleasant, peaceful night of rest, completely free from the dread of sudden terrors [רש״י, מצודת דוד, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. This divine guard remains steadfast even in vulnerable situations, such as sleeping outdoors while traveling, keeping the individual safe from wild animals and thieves [רלב״ג]. The everyday quality of this rest is entirely sweet and soothing [מצודת ציון].

The experience of this physical rest unfolds in two distinct stages. First, the very decision to lie down and go to sleep is carried out with a calm, deliberate sense of security. Following this, the continuous state of sleep itself is actively guarded, shielding the sleeping person from bad dreams and nighttime harms [מלבי״ם]. This promise of safe slumber closely mirrors the divine protection experienced by King David, who assured that the righteous have no reason to fear the dangers of the night [אמרי דעת].

Beyond the practical experience of sleep, an allegorical approach views this peaceful rest as a metaphor for the end of a person's life and their transition into the World to Come [אלשיך, עמנואל הרומי]. An individual who dedicates their life to spiritual wisdom will face the moment of death without fear. The separation of the soul from the body becomes an easy, gentle, and painless process [אלשיך]. Rather than dreading spiritual punishment, the departed soul finds an honorable rest, adorned with the crowns of the righteous and enjoying the radiance of the Divine Presence [עמנואל הרומי].

The passing of the righteous is specifically likened to sleep because of a profound parallel between the two states. Just as a sleeping person's physical senses rest while their inner mind remains active, the death of the righteous brings an end to their physical abilities while the intellectual soul continues to live and thrive [עמנואל הרומי]. Even within the grave, the righteous experience an immense spiritual sweetness generated by the wisdom they learned and the commandments they fulfilled during their lifetime. Ultimately, their physical form is preserved without decay, resting peacefully like someone who is simply asleep [אלשיך].
