משלי, פרק ד׳, פסוק ט״ו

Proverbs 4:15Sefaria

פְּרָעֵ֥הוּ אַל־תַּעֲבׇר־בּ֑וֹ שְׂטֵ֖ה מֵעָלָ֣יו וַעֲבֹֽר׃

Navigating life requires a fierce commitment to staying far away from the influence of those who do evil. A stern warning is presented regarding this lifestyle, emphasizing the severe danger of even getting close to such individuals. The sequence of actions demanded points to a complete rejection, disruption, and turning away from their harmful ways.

There are different ways to understand exactly how to handle this negative path. One perspective calls for active resistance. This means taking practical steps to disrupt and disable the efforts of the wicked, stopping them from causing harm. On an intellectual level, it involves knowing how to confidently answer a heretic and contradict their false claims. However, if a person is not in a position to actively dismantle these efforts, they must at the very least refuse to agree with them and turn away [רלב״ג, מלבי״ם].

Another perspective views this rejection as a profound mental and physical distancing. A person should treat the path of the wicked as if it never existed at all. This avoidance must be so absolute that even if their route offers a quick and convenient shortcut to a destination, one must choose a longer detour just to avoid setting foot on it [אלשיך]. This required distance includes literally running away from foolish individuals and refusing to engage in any conversation or debate with them [אמרי דעת].

When changing course, the movement must be swift. A person must pass by quickly, without pausing or lingering anywhere near the presence of the wicked [עמנואל הרומי]. Furthermore, if someone has already stumbled onto this negative path and been exposed to corrupt ideas, they are commanded to veer off immediately, leave the toxic environment behind, and return to the path of the Torah and genuine faith [מלבי״ם].
