The choices made by those who pursue evil lead to more than just negative actions; they create a state of total blindness and profound disorientation. In this condition, people lose their sense of direction entirely, unable to perceive even the obstacles that cause them to fall. This stands in sharp contrast to the experience of the righteous, who are guided safely to their destination by pure wisdom and the illuminating help of God. For the wicked, life becomes a maze of confusion, distorted beliefs, and intellectual darkness [רלב״ג, עמנואל הרומי, אמרי דעת].
The path of wrongdoing is highly deceptive. At first, it may appear wide, straight, and successful, but this is merely an illusion. Material success acts like an intoxicating wine, clouding the mind and blinding individuals from seeing where their choices will ultimately lead [אלשיך, מלבי״ם]. There is a profound difference in how these lifestyles are experienced. The righteous find light even in their narrow, private daily actions. In contrast, those who do evil walk on a wide, public path that is completely engulfed in darkness, indicating that their hidden, private actions are even darker [מלבי״ם].
This darkness is not a physical lack of light. Rather, it is the result of sinking deeply into physical desires that ruin a person's intellectual capacity. This indulgence leads them completely away from the truth, thoroughly distorting their ability to reason [מצודת דוד, עמנואל הרומי]. Out of this deep darkness comes a tragic consequence: they have no idea what causes them to stumble. On a basic level, hurdles suddenly appear in their way, and because they cannot see, they have no ability to guard themselves [רש״י, מצודת דוד]. God actively frustrates their plans, preventing them from achieving their harmful goals [רלב״ג].
However, this ignorance exists on much deeper levels. Sometimes, their degraded state causes them to trip over obvious foolishness that any ordinary person would easily avoid [עמנואל הרומי]. Yet, the greatest tragedy of the wicked is their complete lack of self-awareness. Their minds are so clouded and their understanding so diminished that they do not even feel themselves failing or getting caught in a trap. Instead, they continue to mistakenly believe that their destructive path is actually the right and true way to live [עמנואל הרומי, אמרי דעת].
