משלי, פרק ד׳, פסוק י׳

Proverbs 4:10Sefaria

שְׁמַ֣ע בְּ֭נִי וְקַ֣ח אֲמָרָ֑י וְיִרְבּ֥וּ לְ֝ךָ֗ שְׁנ֣וֹת חַיִּֽים׃

True wisdom requires more than passive listening; it demands an active, heartfelt embrace of moral teachings. This guidance is not a dry command, but a path where internalizing values naturally leads to a complete and high-quality existence. The instruction is framed with deep affection, as the speaker addresses the listener with the love of a parent, making it clear that his sole desire is for the listener's benefit and well-being [מצודת דוד]. At the same time, this establishes a fundamental duty. A person is obligated to listen to their father, or to God, simply because of the inherent relationship between them [אלשיך].

However, merely hearing the words with one's ears is not enough. True understanding requires taking these teachings directly into the heart with a complete commitment to fulfill them [עמנואל הרומי]. These teachings, whether they are the stories of the Torah or the specific commands of King Solomon [רלב״ג], should be embraced not merely out of a sense of obligation. They must be accepted because of their intrinsic value, as they are rooted in reason and true knowledge [אלשיך]. The ultimate goal of accepting these values is to distance a person from the destructive habits of fools and sinners. By actively practicing truth and honesty, a person builds a solid foundation of good character, ensuring they will not stumble [אמרי דעת].

The natural result of internalizing such wisdom is an abundance of life. This does not merely refer to a high quantity of years, but rather to a life filled with goodness, peace, and quiet [מצודת דוד]. This rich existence spans both tranquility in the present world and eternal life in the next world. A person earns this by climbing the ladder of wisdom and forming a close bond with God [עמנואל הרומי], as the teachings of the Torah naturally guide an individual toward perfecting both their character traits and their intellect [רלב״ג].

Despite this promise of a rich and extended life, one must not follow these instructions simply to receive a prize. A person should listen to God's voice out of a sense of duty and a genuine recognition of the teachings' inner truth. If one acts with the right intentions, the reward of a long, peaceful life will naturally follow on its own [אלשיך]. Furthermore, because God considers a positive intention to be as significant as a completed action, the very moment a person decides in their heart to accept the teachings of the Torah, He immediately grants them years of life, even before they have had the chance to put those teachings into practice [אלשיך].
