משלי, פרק ד׳, פסוק י״ז

Proverbs 4:17Sefaria

כִּ֣י לָ֭חֲמוּ לֶ֣חֶם רֶ֑שַׁע וְיֵ֖ין חֲמָסִ֣ים יִשְׁתּֽוּ׃

A life of wrongdoing often moves beyond isolated bad choices, transforming into the very substance that sustains a person. For those steeped in crime, corruption and violence become as basic and necessary as daily meals. The primary approach among commentators is that this depicts the actual source of the sinners' sustenance. Their food and drink are funded entirely by robbery, oppression, and violence. Within this lifestyle, there is a clear downward spiral [אלשיך]. It begins small, with basic sustenance acquired through theft. However, as they draw more people into their web and expand their criminal reach, their illicit gains grow into a luxurious abundance. This wealth satisfies them deeply, allowing them to sleep peacefully at night without a troubled conscience.

This immediate prosperity creates a dangerous trap [אלשיך]. Seeing corrupt individuals enjoy their stolen wealth without facing immediate consequences can easily tempt honest people. While God reserves the true reward of the righteous for the World to Come, the urge to do wrong uses the swift, visible success of the wicked as a lure to pull good people off their proper path.

Conversely, another perspective views this diet symbolically, representing the inner essence of the wicked. The acts of cruelty and corruption themselves provide them with such intense pleasure and joy that the sins act as a substitute for physical food, bringing them a deep sense of calm [רלב״ג]. Taking the symbolism further, the food and drink represent the corrupt ideas, foreign beliefs, and twisted traditions these individuals absorbed from their teachers [עמנואל הרומי, אמרי דעת]. Instead of being nourished by the wisdom of the Torah, which illuminates the good path, they consume a toxic spiritual diet. Fueled by these false ideologies, they actively work to corrupt others, inciting them to adopt their destructive worldview [אמרי דעת].
