Proverbs 8:12Sefaria

Wisdom steps forward to speak for itself, revealing a deep, unbreakable bond with practical action and human thought. Rather than existing as abstract theory or simple good advice, the primary approach among commentators is that this voice represents God's wisdom and the Torah. It serves as a living guide, granting people practical tools to navigate the world.

In this practical application, wisdom dwells side by side with cleverness. In fact, wisdom can be seen as residing directly within cleverness [אבן עזרא]. The relationship between the two takes several forms. On one level, wisdom actively creates cleverness. When a person studies the Torah, they gain a positive sense of cunning and the ability to manage all areas of life intelligently On another level, cleverness—defined as the mental power to carefully weigh an action before taking it—desperately needs wisdom. Left alone, cleverness can be used for harm, but wisdom guides it toward good deeds and honest thinking

Cleverness also serves as a crucial foundation. It represents human logic, scientific understanding, and natural effort, which together form a necessary ladder. A person can climb this ladder to reach Divine wisdom, provided these efforts are accompanied by the fear of God and a rejection of pride From a spiritual perspective, cleverness acts as the strategy required to escape the evil inclination. This vital defense cannot be achieved without the foundational wisdom of the Torah [מצודת דוד].

Beyond cleverness, wisdom is deeply tied to profound thoughts, contemplation, and common sense Because wisdom fully understands every thought and strategy that exists in the world, it acts as a protective guide, warning people away from harmful paths and hidden obstacles Furthermore, wisdom actively provides people with the right solutions and strategies needed to overcome life's daily struggles and internal temptations Wisdom is also engaged in a search, looking to connect with complete individuals who possess deep understanding By delving into these wise thoughts, a person eventually arrives at a clear and solid knowledge of the truth [מלבי״ם].
