Proverbs 8:4Sefaria

Wisdom makes a public call to all of humanity, acting as a universal herald seeking to guide the world. Unlike the deceptive temptations of sin, which primarily target the foolish [אמרי דעת], wisdom's invitation is open and broad. Yet, in delivering her message, she recognizes the diverse nature of her audience and divides listeners into two distinct groups, carefully tailoring her approach to fit the condition of each.

The primary approach among commentators is that the first group represents individuals of high spiritual and intellectual standing. These are the great scholars and people of refined character who have already purified their hearts, preparing themselves to become a home for wisdom In biblical tradition, a standalone reference to a man often implies a person who is pious and complete [עמנואל הרומי]. However, other perspectives suggest this group might refer specifically to the wealthy [אבן עזרא], or simply to people in a general sense [מצודת ציון].

In contrast, the second group represents the broader masses. From a spiritual perspective, these are the simple, everyday people who currently lack wisdom or have not yet reached personal perfection, even though they hold the potential and the strength to do so Viewed through an economic lens, this group represents the poor, highlighting that the invitation of wisdom is extended equally to both the rich and the impoverished [אבן עזרא].

To effectively reach these two different groups, wisdom adjusts how she speaks. When addressing the spiritually advanced, her call is direct, focused, and intimate. Because these individuals are already close to wisdom and stand at a high spiritual level, she engages them in a direct conversation without needing to raise her voice Conversely, when reaching out to the broader masses, wisdom must project her voice. A loud call is necessary to reach those who are spiritually distant and require clear guidance to find the straight path. Wisdom purposefully projects her voice to the general public so that every single person can hear, find direction, and absorb whatever level of truth they are capable of understanding
