Proverbs 8:6Sefaria

שִׁ֭מְעוּ כִּֽי־נְגִידִ֣ים אֲדַבֵּ֑ר וּמִפְתַּ֥ח שְׂ֝פָתַ֗י מֵישָׁרִֽים׃

Divine wisdom calls out to humanity, declaring that its teachings are not mere parables or poetic exaggerations, but words of absolute truth and justice [רלב״ג].

The primary approach among commentators is that these teachings possess supreme importance, authority, and honor. Just as a commander or leader guides a nation, the words of the Torah are excellent, clear, and hold profound influence over those who hear them [רש״י, אבן עזרא, מצודת דוד, עמנואל הרומי, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. Alternatively, wisdom may not be describing its own words, but rather addressing its audience directly, calling upon the noble and important leaders of the people to listen closely [עמנואל הרומי, אמרי דעת]. Taking a different path, a unique perspective suggests these teachings are designed to stand in direct opposition to human material desires, providing the strength needed to defeat them [חומת אנך].

This call from wisdom also reflects the different layers of divine teaching. The authoritative aspects represent the profound, complex parts of the Torah. This includes the Oral Law and its intricate rules meant for the great minds of the nation [מלבי״ם], as well as the inner secrets and holy names hidden within the text, which govern the world like supreme ministers [אלשיך]. In contrast, the words that simply emerge from the lips symbolize the Written Law—the clear, revealed layer of teaching intended for the general public.

Every word spoken by divine wisdom is fair, just, and entirely true, free from any distortion [רלב״ג, ביאור שטיינזלץ, מצודת דוד, עמנואל הרומי, אמרי דעת]. These teachings offer straight, logical guidance that the human mind can naturally accept with an honest heart. This stands in sharp contrast to human laws, which can easily fail to accurately distinguish between true good and evil [מלבי״ם, אלשיך]. Furthermore, the very act of opening the lips serves as a subtle reminder of humility. A humble spirit is the best possible opening and the most essential foundation for receiving divine wisdom, fulfilling the commandments, and overcoming negative urges [חומת אנך].
