יְֽהֹוָ֗ה קָ֭נָנִי רֵאשִׁ֣ית דַּרְכּ֑וֹ קֶ֖דֶם מִפְעָלָ֣יו מֵאָֽז׃

At this point in the text, the focus shifts dramatically from practical, everyday advice to a vision of supreme, heavenly wisdom. Wisdom itself takes on a voice, speaking directly to declare its place as the oldest and very first entity in the universe [אבן עזרא, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. It is presented in the broadest and most abstract terms, not merely as a human trait, but as a foundational cosmic reality [ביאור שטיינזלץ].

Wisdom announces that God brought it into existence, inventing it entirely so that it belongs exclusively to Him [אבן עזרא, ביאור שטיינזלץ, מצודת דוד]. The emphasis on being possessed or acquired by God highlights a profound transition from absolute nothingness into reality [אמרי דעת]. More importantly, this establishes a crucial boundary: only God is truly eternal and completely independent. Even something as magnificent as supreme wisdom is still a creation. This firmly rejects any notion that other spiritual forces or beings existed eternally alongside the Creator [עמנואל הרומי].

Wisdom was formed at the very dawn of existence, long before God began any other acts of creation [רש״י, מצודת דוד]. However, this priority is not necessarily about chronological time, as time itself is a creation. Instead, it is a precedence of cause and necessity [אבן עזרא, אמרי דעת]. Wisdom was God's very first intention when He set out to create the world [אבן עזרא].

Commentators explore the true nature of this ancient wisdom through several interconnected ideas. One approach views it as the cosmic blueprint and underlying form of all worlds. It is the system of laws and rules used to measure, plan, and build every part of the universe; without this guiding intelligence, reality would be completely random [מלבי״ם, אמרי דעת]. Another perspective identifies this wisdom with the highest spiritual realms, such as the angels or the initial spiritual light formed on the first day, which existed before anything physical [עמנואל הרומי]. A third view interprets wisdom as God's attribute of mercy. Initially, the thought arose to build the world based on strict justice, but knowing reality could not survive under such harsh conditions, God first created pure mercy to guide existence. In this reading, it is mercy itself that is speaking [אלשיך].

These profound ideas clarify a deep distinction between the preliminary spiritual path and the later stage of active works. The concept of a path refers to the stage before any actual action takes place [מלבי״ם באור המילות]. It symbolizes the purely spiritual realm, the supreme attributes, and the non-physical essence that flows directly from God [מלבי״ם, אמרי דעת, אלשיך]. In contrast, works refer to the physical effort and the actual making of things [מלבי״ם באור המילות]. This represents the material reality and the practical management of the world, which only came into being later as existence cascaded from the spiritual down into the physical [מלבי״ם, אמרי דעת, אלשיך]. Ultimately, wisdom came before it all. It was the starting point of the spiritual path, and therefore, it naturally preceded all physical creation and earthly action.
