משלי, פרק ט׳, פסוק י״ב

Proverbs 9:12Sefaria

אִם־חָ֭כַמְתָּ חָכַ֣מְתָּ לָּ֑ךְ וְ֝לַ֗צְתָּ לְֽבַדְּךָ֥ תִשָּֽׂא׃

Every person holds full responsibility for the path they choose in life and the consequences that follow. The decision to pursue moral knowledge or to turn away from it does not alter the fabric of creation or change a person's social standing. Instead, it directly and exclusively shapes the destiny of the individual making the choice.

The primary approach among commentators is that an individual is the first and main beneficiary of the wisdom they acquire. A person's righteousness adds nothing to God; rather, it provides a direct benefit to the person themselves. Reaching this Divine wisdom means achieving true perfection and fulfilling the central purpose for which humanity was created [עמנואל הרומי]. While the process of gaining this knowledge can sometimes involve hardship and difficulty, the wisdom ultimately becomes an eternal possession, while the temporary struggles simply fade away. Furthermore, a person who puts effort into acquiring wisdom receives direct assistance from God in carrying the heavy burdens of life [אלשיך].

Conversely, the path of mockery stands as the complete opposite of wisdom [אבן עזרא]. This destructive attitude can take the form of mocking and disrespecting other people [מצודת דוד]. It can also manifest more subtly, such as settling for idle chatter, focusing only on history stories, or remaining trapped in superficial logic without ever advancing toward true Divine wisdom [עמנואל הרומי].

When a person chooses this negative path, they alone must face the consequences. Most commentators agree that such an individual will bear the punishment, the sin, and the destructive results of their actions entirely by themselves. Because every human being is born to face challenges in this world, the one who abandons wisdom will find themselves carrying life's hardships completely alone, lacking any help or support from Heaven [אלשיך].

The placement of this idea is deeply intentional, as it concludes the first part of the Book of Proverbs. This opening section is dedicated to awakening a desire for wisdom and morality while distancing a person from empty materialism. It cements the core reality that both the profound benefits of wisdom and the severe damage of mockery depend completely on the individual, ensuring that a person's soul will receive exactly what they have prepared for themselves [אמרי דעת].
