תהלים, פרק ק״ח, פסוק י״ב

Psalms 108:12Sefaria

הֲלֹֽא־אֱלֹהִ֥ים זְנַחְתָּ֑נוּ וְֽלֹא־תֵצֵ֥א אֱ֝לֹהִ֗ים בְּצִבְאֹתֵֽינוּ׃

A painful cry over military defeat often feels like a moment of despair, but it actually reveals a profound recognition of God's direct control over human destiny. In both times of bitter crisis and moments of salvation, the fate of the nation is never left to chance. The distress experienced by the people stems from a clear reality: their past troubles occurred simply because God withdrew His support and did not accompany their forces into battle [מצודת ציון]. By acknowledging that past failures were the direct result of God stepping back from their armies, they arrive at a vital realization about the present. Any current victory or rescue comes solely from God and His kindness, rather than through coincidence or human might [מצודת דוד, ביאור שטיינזלץ].

A deeper perspective explores the evolving nature of this cry. The people express deep sorrow over the illusion that their survival depends on flesh and blood leaders, such as King David. Initially, their prayer rings with a sense of total abandonment. However, because the Divine Presence is known to follow the Israelites into exile and never truly forsakes them, the core of their plea shifts. They are not actually complaining about being completely left behind. Rather, they are asking God to actively rest His divine presence within their earthly military camps, exactly as His presence dwells among the heavenly armies [אלשיך].
