The call to praise God extends far beyond local borders, encompassing all of humanity across the globe. By tracking the sun from its starting point in the east to its final destination in the west, a picture emerges of a universal chorus [מצודת ציון, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. These specific directions represent the entire stretch of human settlement. They cover the twelve hours of daylight where the vast majority of the populated world is concentrated [אבן עזרא, רד״ק]. Across this entire expanse, from one end of the earth to the other, God's name is praised by all who dwell there [מצודת דוד, ביאור שטיינזלץ].

However, commentators offer different perspectives on the true nature of this worldwide praise. One approach suggests a deeply rooted, universal recognition of God. According to this view, even those who worship idols ultimately acknowledge Him as the supreme cause of all existence, leading them to offer their thanks and praise [רד״ק]. In contrast, a more critical perspective argues that the praise offered by the nations is fundamentally flawed. This view contends that their expressions of praise stem from negative intentions and rebellion, and the true purpose of noting their widespread worship is actually to reject it [אלשיך].

Beyond its conceptual meaning, this universal call to praise carries practical weight in Jewish law. It serves as a central source in the Talmud for the actual obligation to recite the Hallel prayer during various holidays [תורה תמימה].
