תהלים, פרק קי״ג, פסוק ה׳

Psalms 113:5Sefaria

מִ֭י כַּיהֹוָ֣ה אֱלֹהֵ֑ינוּ הַֽמַּגְבִּיהִ֥י לָשָֽׁבֶת׃

True greatness often reveals itself in the balance between infinite power and intimate care. The fundamental uniqueness of God lies precisely in this combination of boundless elevation and close supervision over creation. Unlike the deities of other nations, which were often associated with the stars and heavenly bodies, God is exalted far above all celestial powers [רד״ק]. This supreme elevation is not merely a matter of position, but an expression of His absolute eternity, existing entirely without beginning or end [מאירי].

A striking contrast emerges when considering this immense greatness alongside God's profound humility [מצודת דוד]. Although He establishes His dwelling place high above all existence [אבן עזרא], He willingly lowers Himself to look upon the lower realms. From His infinite vantage point, both the heavens and the earth are considered equally lowly. Yet, He closely watches over all creations, intimately knowing their every action [רד״ק, אבן עזרא] and constantly guiding them with His direct providence [מאירי].

At its core, the description of God's exalted position simply affirms that He elevates His presence above all [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. The primary approach among commentators views the specific phrasing used to describe this height as a stylistic choice meant to add poetic elegance. However, another perspective suggests that the language points to a deeper reality regarding the permanence of His position. It indicates that God's supreme elevation is not a fleeting action, but a constant, unchanging, and eternal state [מלבי״ם].
