לְ֭מַעַן בֵּית־יְהֹוָ֣ה אֱלֹהֵ֑ינוּ אֲבַקְשָׁ֖ה ט֣וֹב לָֽךְ׃ {פ}

The prayer for the peace of Jerusalem reaches its peak by shifting focus from the social and national aspects of the city to its supreme spiritual center. The true well-being of the city is inextricably linked to the presence of the Temple within it. The primary approach among commentators is that the main motivation for seeking peace and goodness for Jerusalem is for the sake of the House of God. The prayer asks God to bless the city with abundance by the merit of His sanctuary, whether it is currently standing or yet to be built.

This dynamic reveals a deep dialogue of mutual honor. While God humbly attributes the glory of Jerusalem to the people of Israel, the proper human response is to redirect that honor back to Him. The desire for the city's success is, first and foremost, for the glory of God and His Temple, and only secondarily because He is the God who dwells among the nation [אלשיך].

Attaining this spiritual goodness requires a deliberate and active pursuit, highlighting a sharp contrast between physical and spiritual achievements. The political and social benefits of a thriving Jerusalem are visible and obvious to everyone. However, the profound spiritual benefits that flow from the House of God—such as inner happiness, holiness, prophecy, and the resting of the Divine presence—remain hidden. Because it is concealed, this spiritual elevation does not emerge on its own. It demands an active search, requiring people to purposefully seek it out through the fulfillment of commandments and good deeds [מלבי״ם].
