תהלים, פרק קל״ב, פסוק ה׳

Psalms 132:5Sefaria

עַד־אֶמְצָ֣א מָ֭קוֹם לַיהֹוָ֑ה מִ֝שְׁכָּנ֗וֹת לַאֲבִ֥יר יַעֲקֹֽב׃

King David is driven by an intense commitment to locate the exact, predestined site for the Holy Temple. He is not merely looking for an available plot of land, but searching for a unique spiritual location whose exact whereabouts are initially a mystery.

While the entire earth belongs to God, certain locations hold a greater, distinct holiness [אבן עזרא]. David seeks a site that possesses an inherent sanctity, holy to God long before any physical structure is built upon it. This specific spot serves as the gate of heaven, a place where the Divine Presence has rested since the dawn of creation. It is the very ground where monumental events unfolded, such as the gathering of the earth to form the first man, the offerings brought by Adam and Noah, and the binding of Isaac [אלשיך].

The concept of the Temple encompasses multiple layers, existing as a plurality of dwellings. On a physical level, the structure itself is composed of three distinct sections: the Courtyard, the Sanctuary, and the Holy of Holies [רד״ק, מלבי״ם]. On a spiritual level, this plurality points to two parallel realities: an earthly Temple that aligns perfectly with a heavenly one [אלשיך]. Only once this profoundly worthy location is discovered can the Temple be constructed, allowing God's presence to rest there permanently [מלבי״ם].

David’s quest is deeply tied to the legacy of his ancestor, Jacob. The concept of God dwelling in a specific physical space on earth was first revealed to Jacob during his dream of the ladder, where he recognized the site as the house of God. The ladder, resting on the earth and reaching into the heavens, perfectly symbolizes the bond between the earthly and heavenly Temples [אלשיך]. Furthermore, David’s vow to find this sacred location directly mirrors the vow Jacob made at that very same spot to establish a house for God [מלבי״ם].
